US Social Security data (via DOGE)

Affected: Most living Americans

Social Security numbers and personal records were reportedly copied to an unsecured third-party server — potentially the largest US data exposure ever.

Do this: Freeze or monitor your credit. Treat any ‘SSA’ call or text as a scam — the SSA writes letters, it doesn’t call.

Instructure Canvas (schools & universities)

Affected: 30+ million students and staff

The learning platform was breached twice; personal data exposed and login screens defaced during finals.

Do this: If your school uses Canvas: change the password, enable 2FA, and watch for fake ‘grade change’ phishing emails.

Charter (ShinyHunters)

Affected: 40 million records

Customer records stolen in the ShinyHunters campaign that also hit Carnival Cruise (6M+), Harvard and government agencies.

Do this: Assume your email + phone are circulating: be extra suspicious of ‘your account has a problem’ messages naming these companies.

Instagram / Meta AI-chatbot abuse

Affected: Tens of thousands of accounts

Attackers abused an AI chatbot flow to trigger password resets through account recovery.

Do this: Turn on 2FA in Instagram now; ignore unexpected ‘password reset’ emails — go to the app directly instead.

Identity-document exposures

Affected: 2+ million people

Passport and driving-licence scans leaked from hotels, money-transfer apps and visa portals.

Do this: If you’ve uploaded ID to a small service recently, watch for identity fraud; consider a credit freeze.

Klue supply-chain breach

Affected: ~200 companies

A credential from 2022 — left active for four years — let attackers steal customer cloud keys.

Do this: The lesson for everyone: old unused accounts are open doors. Delete accounts you no longer use (Day 9 of our challenge).
