A slow computer is the most universal tech complaint there is, and it has spawned an entire industry of “PC cleaner” and “speed booster” products that range from useless to actively harmful. The truth is less profitable but more helpful: slowdowns have a short list of real causes, most are checkable in minutes, and the fixes are either free or cheap.

First, find out what is actually busy

Open Task Manager on Windows (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) or Activity Monitor on a Mac and sort by CPU, then by memory, then by disk. This single view answers the diagnostic question: is something consuming the machine, or is the machine itself the bottleneck? A process pinning the CPU at 90% is a lead; every column showing modest numbers while things still feel sluggish points at storage or the browser instead.

Cause 1: Too much starting at boot

Every app that “helpfully” launches at startup – updaters, game launchers, chat apps, cloud sync from three services – stays resident forever. In Task Manager’s Startup tab (or System Settings → General → Login Items on Mac), disable everything you do not need within five minutes of sitting down. This is the most common single fix for machines that take minutes to become usable.

Cause 2: The browser ate the RAM

Forty tabs, six extensions and three web apps make the browser a heavier program than anything else you run. If slowness correlates with browsing sessions: close tab hoarders (or use a tab-suspender feature – modern browsers sleep inactive tabs if you let them), and uninstall extensions you do not actively use. Extensions cost memory and privacy simultaneously, so pruning pays twice.

Cause 3: A spinning hard drive in an SSD world

If your computer has a mechanical hard drive – common in cheaper laptops well into the 2020s – it is the bottleneck for everything: boot, app launches, file opens. Replacing it with an SSD is the single most transformative upgrade in personal computing, routinely making an eight-year-old laptop feel new, and it costs less than a night out. If your machine already has an SSD but it is more than about 90% full, free up space; nearly-full SSDs slow down by design.

Cause 4: Not enough memory for how you work

When RAM runs out, the system swaps to disk, and everything stutters. If the memory column sits above 85-90% during normal use, either lighten the load (fewer simultaneous apps, fewer tabs) or add RAM if your machine allows it. 8 GB is the practical floor for comfortable browsing-and-office work today; 16 GB removes the ceiling for most people.

Cause 5: Malware – and its cousin, the “cleaner” app

Cryptominers and adware genuinely do slow machines: check for unknown processes consuming CPU while idle and run a full scan with the built-in antivirus. But know that dubious “PC optimizer” products cause the same symptoms they claim to cure – background scans, pop-ups, paid-upgrade nagging. Registry cleaning in particular is a relic that carries risk and delivers no measurable speed. Uninstall such tools; Windows and macOS maintain themselves better than third-party cleaners do.

Cause 6: Thermal throttling

Laptops full of dust, or used on duvets that block vents, protect themselves by slowing down. If slowness arrives with a hot chassis and roaring fan minutes into work: clean the vents with compressed air, use the machine on hard surfaces, and if it is years old, a repair-shop clean and thermal-paste refresh is cheap and effective.

The honest checklist, in order

  1. Task Manager / Activity Monitor: identify what is actually consuming resources.
  2. Cut startup programs.
  3. Prune browser tabs and extensions.
  4. Full antivirus scan; uninstall any “cleaner/booster” products.
  5. Check drive type and free space – budget for an SSD if mechanical.
  6. Check RAM headroom against how you actually work.
  7. Clean the vents.

If all seven come back clean and the machine still cannot keep up with your work, it is not broken – it has simply aged out of your workload, and that is when replacement money is well spent rather than wasted.
